From Chapter 11: The Big Three.
[This excerpt describes how vaccinated children and pertussis vaccination in general are the main reason for recent pertussis outbreaks.]

"Both the whole-cell pertussis vaccine, directed against the bacterium, and the acellular version directed against specific proteins of it, have hastened the emergence of resistant strains lacking these antigens, as well as an entirely different species, Bordetella parapertussis, all of which have contributed to a dramatic resurgence of a generally more virulent form of whooping cough in recent years, with extensive outbreaks occurring in highly-vaccinated populations, and even public health officials admitting for the first time that asymptomatic, vaccinated carriers are mainly responsible for the transmission, rather than the unvaccinated kids who have always taken the blame for it in the past."
